Besides content, links are the most important factor to ranking well on the search engines. That means both the links on your website and links coming in from other websites.

But for a search engine to understand what the link is about, it is important that you TELL the search engines what the link is about. Linking to a page with the words "click here" doesn't tell the search engines anything. But if your page is about SEO for instance, and you link to that page using the word "SEO", than the search engine CAN understand that your link is about SEO.

So next time you tell a search engine what you are linking to, use your words, as your mom would say

That's a great point. I think in the beginning we didn't think users were savvy enough to realize had a single word or phrase meant, that it was a link. We wanted to direct them with the command - click here.

While I agree this is a good tip, webmasters should be wary not to overdo it. Stuffing your site with keywords begins to look awkward and fake. It's amazing how many keywords Google will pull from your site just from writing naturally, anyway.

This was so obvious, yet I never realized it. Thanks for the guidance. I mostly used "click here" as link text on my blog. A bit of SEO would have helped a lot. Thanks again.
