What are the essential things that I need before I get started in marketing my site?

Hi Dolly - I'm not an expert but I think I may have a couple of points worth mentioning
that I've heard about.

My understanding is that pagerank methods keep evolving, but the links to our sites should be "quality links" meaning links from related sites and not simply links in a forum that's unrelated to our content, for example. A couple years ago I wouldn't have considered that.

And I also hear that we should be careful about having duplicate content on our sites, as this can have a negative effect with search engines.

Of course, I'd also be interested to hear tips from the pros.

Good clear articles, with all the information about your product/service set out in easily accessible pages, without clutter.

It also depends on what the message of your site is. Are you a company that just sells things or are you a service? Or maybe just a person at home earning some income?

Work out who your target audience is, and make sure yor content will be of interest.

If it is a young audience, make sure it is fun, and the articles are not too complicated and long winded..

the current generation have a very short attention span. If they get bored they'll leave.

I'm sure that's true.

And that reminds me that the colors and graphics intended for the younger crowd may seem kind of odd to those of us who are older.
