Optimally, how frequently should a commercial blog be updated? Should it be daily or weekly, or something different?

At least once a week. It will be hard to inspire a loyal following with less.

Beyond that this question is hard to answer - it all depends on what objectives you try to reach through blogging.

I think some blogs like those focusing on entertainment news could be updated daily, and in those cases there's probably new material to deal with that frequently.

Great example. If you are an entertainment site the question isn't how often but WHEN. You'll need to publish the news as close to breaking as possible in order to be a viable information source.

So in essence it depends on the urgency of the site, or how time dependent the topics being blogged about are.

That reminds me of hearing about the manager of The Black Eyed Peas tweeting about being assaulted the night of an awards show in Toronto, if I'm not mistaken. I guess it's a positive sign that he was still well enough to promote his business.

Hopefully he wasn't seriously hurt.
